WhatsApp has issued a warning to its users about a new scam involving fraudulent international calls. The scam involves receiving a missed call from a foreign number and being charged for the call if the user calls back. WhatsApp has urged users to be cautious and take two important steps to avoid falling victim to the scam.
First, WhatsApp recommends that users do not respond to calls or messages from unknown numbers, particularly those with foreign area codes. Second, the company advises users to block any suspicious numbers and report them to WhatsApp immediately.
WhatsApp has assured its users that it takes security and privacy seriously and is working to improve its platform’s security features to prevent scams and protect its users. It also encourages users to be vigilant and take precautions to keep their personal information safe.
WhatsApp has implemented several security features to help protect users from scams and unauthorized access to their accounts. Here are some of the steps that WhatsApp provides:
- Two-factor authentication: This feature allows users to add an extra layer of security to their accounts by requiring a six-digit code to be entered before accessing the account. The code is sent to the user’s registered phone number.
- End-to-end encryption: All messages and calls on WhatsApp are protected by end-to-end encryption, which ensures that only the sender and receiver can access the content of their communication.
- Report a contact: WhatsApp allows users to report suspicious or spammy contacts by opening the chat, tapping on the contact’s name, scrolling down, and selecting “Report contact”.
- Forwarding limits: To prevent the spread of misinformation and scams, WhatsApp has implemented limits on message forwarding. Users can only forward a message to five chats at a time.
- Blocking unknown contacts: WhatsApp allows users to block any unknown or suspicious contact. To do so, users can open the chat with the contact, tap on the contact’s name, and select “Block”.
By implementing these security features and encouraging users to be vigilant, WhatsApp is working to prevent scams and protect its users’ privacy and security.
