Meta’s Threads crosses 150 Million downloads – A groundbreaking microblogging social app Threads, which was launched globally just a week ago, has set new standards in the realm of mobile software product releases. Its exceptional performance is unlikely to be surpassed in the coming quarters or even years. Within a mere seven days, the app has achieved an astounding download count of over 150 million worldwide, surpassing the previous record set by Niantic’s Pokémon GO, which held the title since its debut in July 2016. Let’s delve into the details of this remarkable feat.
Meta’s Threads: Unprecedented User Base Right from the Start
Initial data from data.ai Intelligence, a blend of panel-based real usage signals and advanced AI and machine learning, reveals that Threads attracted an audience of approximately 93 million active users worldwide during its first partial week of availability. Subsequently, Meta announced that Threads had surpassed 100 million signups by Monday morning, July 10.
While the leading social apps worldwide usually accumulate weekly active user counts in the range of hundreds of millions, Threads’ achievement of nearly 100 million Weekly Active Users (WAU) during this early phase is unprecedented. It already accounts for about one-fifth of Twitter’s global WAU and is 86 times larger than Truth Social, the largest Twitter rival in the United States, which currently boasts 1 million WAU.
India Emerges as the Leading Market for Threads
Until now, the geographical distribution of Threads’ install base remained undisclosed. However, recent findings indicate that India stands as the leading market, constituting approximately 32% of the total downloads. Indian consumers have exhibited a strong affinity for new social platforms in the past, as exemplified by the cultural phenomenon surrounding ByteDance’s TikTok before it ceased operations in the country. Additionally, India ranks as Twitter’s second-largest market in terms of both lifetime downloads and monthly active users.
Overnight Success for Instagram Threads
The launch of Instagram Threads has proven to be an overnight success, amassing over 100 million users within days of its introduction. Notably, the app has already garnered one-fifth of Twitter’s weekly active user base worldwide. It exceeds the weekly active user count of Truth Social, the largest Twitter rival in the U.S., by a staggering 86-fold, given the latter’s mere 1 million WAU as of last week.
These new insights, provided by app intelligence firm data.ai, follow a previous analysis of Threads’ early traction, which revealed a slight decline in initial usage. According to Sensor Tower, an app intelligence firm, Threads experienced a decrease in daily active users on Tuesday and Wednesday, with usage dropping by approximately 20%. Furthermore, the average time spent on the app decreased by 50%, from 20 minutes to 10 minutes, as reported by CNBC.
Nevertheless, Threads continues to gain momentum, as indicated by data.ai. The app has now surpassed 150 million downloads, achieving this milestone at a rate 5.5 times faster than Niantic’s Pokémon GO, which previously held the record for the largest app launch since its debut in July 2016.
Data.ai also unveiled additional insights regarding Threads’ user base, revealing that the Twitter rival attracted around 93 million active users globally during its first partial week of availability. This milestone was announced officially when Threads reached 100 million signups on July 10.
Furthermore, data.ai’s research indicates that India, rather than the U.S., leads in terms of app downloads, accounting for 33% of global downloads. Brazil follows closely at 22%, the U.S. at 16%, and Mexico and Japan at 8% and 5%, respectively. However, it’s important to note that Threads is currently unavailable in the EU due to regulatory challenges associated with privacy concerns and data collection practices. Meta has recently implemented measures to prevent EU users from bypassing this restriction through the use of VPNs.
Just a few days ago, Threads released its first significant update since its launch, introducing support for iOS 17, which is now available as a public beta, alongside several minor improvements. Upcoming enhancements for the app include a following feed, an edit button, multi-account support, and integration with ActivityPub, the protocol powering Mastodon, a popular decentralized alternative to Twitter.
